Lesson Plans

I love creating lesson plans-however the process can be very time consuming! Every campus, principal and even school district has their own way of submitting lesson plans. Nowadays, they are submitted online, meaning that there is a provided template to use. I have created lesson plans in Triand and Eduphoria-very time consuming. After adding in all the required information, I am not able to follow the plans in my teaching. So, what I did was to create my own very simple template. I can refer back to it while teaching, to see what is next in my lessons. It is a lesson plan template that I can read and follow and takes little time to add to and change each week.

I also have created 4 weeks of plans for each month, instead of dating the lesson plans. This is so that I can easily refer back to them based on the month and not the exact date that it was taught the previous year. So, September has Week 1, 2, 3, and 4 and October has Week 1, 2, 3 and 4…and so on. I designed the template to include the main activity that the students will do. This helps me to know the materials that I need to prepare and have ready for the week.

UPDATE! Many of you have asked when I will post the rest of the lesson plans on here. So, I have begun creating a new style of plans, similar to those above. I am actually  in the process of writing a Kindergarten curriculum, similar to the one that I used in my Houston Public School. As a curriculum specialist, I am in the process of extensivley researching the best methods and formats for teaching letters and sounds and Reading! Also, my son is in Kindergarten this year, so he is inspiring me. We are in Saudi Arabia and the schools are quite different here. Therefore, the curriculum that I am creating will supplement his education, as I enrich him at home.  To get these FREE lesson plans…go to the page tab at the top of my home page and click on “New! Lesson Plans.” I will be adding them as I create them! I am currently compiling “Month 2.” I labeled them by month so that you can begin them when you want. However they do build one upon another. You can even skip a whole month if your children already know their letter and sounds and can sound out simple CVC words. Teaching Reading and Phonics can be tricky and confusing. Should you have any questions/concerns, feel free to email me. I promise to reply back as soon as I can. -Andrea

Thank you for all the great information. I am currently student teaching and I can’t wait till my name is on the door. I have been trying to master the art of lesson plans and I too find it time consuming. I love all the other great stuff that you have posted here. Thank you for sharing. I am a sponge and want to learn learn learn.

      Hi Sharae,

I am so happy that you are able to use some things that you found here on my site. During your student teaching, this is the time to “take-take-take.” I acquired so many great ideas and resources from other teachers that were willing to give-when I student taught twelve years ago. That giving spirit can usually be found within some really great teachers. Feel free to contact me anytime for any help that you may need. If I can’t help, maybe I can save you some Google search time, by pointing you in the right direction. Happy teaching and happy Thanksgiving!

I really love this site. Do you know when you will be adding the remaining months of lesson plans???

      • greenbeankindergarten September 24, 2012 at 8:19 am #

        Oh, Amanda
I just got so busy. Our school district moved to a new online lesson planner. It took hours to input one subject level for an entire week. So, my own “real” lesson plans that I normally typed up (since the online ones were too many pages)…unfortunately took the sidelines. I am so sorry and will try to update it better soon! Thanks for reading. Is there anything else you’d like to see on this site? -Andrea

Your lesson plans have given me lots of ideas. I homeschool and find that creating lesson plans is difficult. Thanks for posting yours!
Do you have a Yr. lesson plan overview?
My biggest problem is in Language skills and the order taught.

Hello – I also have an overview of how I taught the skills throughout the year. It starts from letter sounds to sight words, then word families. It is on the top of homepage, under the CURRICULUM tab and then scroll down to the CURRICULUM TIMELINE 2010-2011. It has the complete order. I’m sure this will a good guide for you. My school in Houston followed this order and I just made my own “easy to read timeline” out of it. It is all based on Texas standards, which I must add are a bit harder than other states.

Did you want a letter Y or a letter R Lesson Plan?

      Hi,
I have created a year long Kindergarten curriculum based on Montessori and Standards based teaching. It includes phonics and reading as well as Math, Science and Social Studies. If you are interested just send me an email and I can send you the file. I will be posting some of the lesson plans here as well! -Andrea

        Hello Andrea,
I am a first year kindergarten teacher at small progressive school. I would love a copy of your Montessori curriculum. Can you please send me a copy?

      • Andrea Howell Chouhan November 16, 2012 at 10:31 pm #

        Hi Meghan,
I hope that you are having a wonderful school year. I wouldn’t really pin my curriculum as Montessori, although Montessori inspirations are weaved throughout. I will keep posting the lesson plans that I am creating, as I create them. Feel free to follow this blog and you will receive an email notification when they are posted. Thank you for your interest! Let me know if I can help you in any way! Also, I have a Linkedin group that I created for Kindergarten teachers. Feel free to come join and collaborate with us. We have more than 500 members! It is called: Kindergarten Teachers United. -Andrea

I am so glad to have been of help to you. I’m glad you like the format as much as I do! Check your email-I am sending you the 12 month file. It is just the overview, as I am still writing the lesson plans as I go… -Andrea
